Solar Realms — Strategy Guide

Solar Realms is a free multiplayer browser strategy game and modern reboot of the legendary 1990s BBS door game Solar Realms Elite. Colonize planets, build fleets, wage war, and rise to galactic dominance.

Getting Started

Every empire begins with a small collection of planets, a modest military force, and 20 turns of protection. Use your protection period wisely — build your economy before the galaxy turns hostile.

Planet Types & Economy

Your empire's economy runs on six planet types, each serving a critical role:

ORE Planets — Generate 4,000 credits/turn each. Your primary income source with diminishing returns at scale (100% up to 100 planets, then 75%, 50%, 25%).
TOURISM Planets — Generate 2,500-7,500 credits/turn depending on peace level. Higher income than ORE at peace, but insurgency tanks the output.
FOOD Planets — Produce 100 food/turn each. Your population and military consume food every turn — run out and people starve.
URBAN Planets — Provide 50,000 housing capacity each. Population can't grow beyond your housing cap.
EDUCATION Planets — Attract 2,000 immigrants/turn each. The faster way to grow population.
GOVERNMENT Planets — Required for expansion (1 per 100 other planets) and insurgency recovery. Neglect governance at your peril.

Military Units

Combat in Solar Realms plays out across three sequential fronts. The attacker must win each front to advance:

Three-Front Combat System

Ground Front — Attacker's soldiers vs defender's soldiers + stations. Win here to establish a beachhead.
Space Front — Fighters and cruisers clash with the defender's orbital fleet and stations.
Deep Space Front — Only cruisers operate here. Win all three fronts for a dominant victory and maximum plunder.

Covert Operations

Deploy covert agents behind enemy lines for espionage and sabotage:

SPY — Reveal an enemy's military strength and planet breakdown.
BOMB_FOOD — Destroy enemy food stockpiles, triggering starvation.
INSURGENT_AID — Increase insurgency in the target empire, reducing tourism income and causing emigration.
DEMORALIZE — Weaken enemy military morale.
SUPPORT_DISSENSION — Fund rebel groups to destabilize the government.

Winning Strategies

Economic Powerhouse (Turtle)

Focus on TOURISM and ORE planets during protection. Build defense stations and soldiers for deterrence. Let compound growth do the work — a well-run economy generates millions per turn by mid-game.

Military Aggressor

Build a balanced economy early, then shift to military production. Target weaker neighbors to steal planets and credits. Use covert ops to soften targets before attacking.

Espionage Master

Invest heavily in covert agents. Sabotage the leading empire's food supply and governance. A well-timed BOMB_FOOD + INSURGENT_AID combo can cripple even the strongest empire.

Create & Host Your Own Galaxy

One of the biggest additions in this modern reboot: create your own galaxy and invite others to join. Configure turns per day, protection length, and player count. Make your galaxy public for anyone to discover, or keep it private with invite codes — like hosting your own private BBS, but in the browser. Each galaxy is a self-contained universe with its own leaderboard, politics, and warfare.

AI Opponents

Every galaxy is populated with intelligent AI bot empires that play alongside human players. Bots use real strategy — building economies, launching covert ops, and attacking rivals. They keep galaxies active even when human players are offline.

Solar Realms Elite was a BBS door game created by Amit Patel in the early 1990s. It was one of the most popular multiplayer strategy games in the BBS era, where players would dial in via modem to compete for galactic dominance in a single galaxy per BBS. This web-based reboot preserves the spirit of the original — all the classic mechanics like planets, military, food, and population — while bringing it to modern browsers with no download required.
